Welcome To SOLUTIONS FOR EMAIL PROBLEMS
9.16.05
All CNHS students –
I have been working with many of you in the past year to learn about the problems you have with UMB email. There are several common problems which many of you experience Your ability to communicate with us is important to us. We want you to feel confident and up-to-date with news and announcements. Please read the info below and follow the instructions if you are having email problems.
PLEASE SHARE THIS INFO WITH YOUR CLASSMATES AND FRIENDS so that they, too, can be in the loop.
** ALWAYS CHECK IN @ www.cnhs.umb.edu to read the most recent important announcements and find copies of email blitzes sent out by CHS administration/staff to certain groups of students. If you are ever in doubt about news or deadlines, check into this site for clarification. IF you have questions or concerns that are not addressed on our student webpage and you believe others need to be in-the-know also, email me elizabeth.garcia@umb.edu and I will do my best to track down the answer and post it for you and all students to be aware.
It is very important to us that you feel good about communication within the college and that you know what you need to be your best.
Not getting emails? Follow this list of possible culprits:
-
Have you ACTIVATED your email with Customer Service?
-
If you have activated your email and you have received at least one message in the past but are having problems…Consider the following:
-
Have you set your email to FORWARD to your primary account such as AOL, Yahoo, Comcast, Hotmail, etc? If so, you will need to UNFOWARD to that account because of the security and spam blockers which prevent your UMB email from being sent thru. Follow these instructions!
-
“Mailbox is FULL” You are getting messages or your professor is getting bounced emails with the message that your Inbox is full. What to do: Delete your emails. HIghlight the email and select the X at the top of the page/menu bar to delete.
-
WHAT IF… You HAVE deleted emails, but still get the FULL message? Make sure you EMPTY YOUR TRASHCAN. I once encountered a student who diligently deleted all emails, but never emptied the trashcan – there were 700+ messages in the trash can taking up space! Look for the GREEN RECYCLE arrows or trashcan to EMPTY YOUR TRASH, it is on the top of the page/menu bar.
-
What if your mailbox is FULL and you HAVE TRIED to delete messages but they won’t go away? This is a rare problem, but if open your inbox and see your instructors’ name with a number beside it {Example: McInnis (21) or Aber (13) that means all messages from that instructor has collapsed into a single message in your in-box. Double-click on the message to access the full listing of messages. If you no longer need the email and handout, delete it – see instructions above
NOTE!! To delete MULTIPLE messages at one time, place your cursor on the first message you would like to delete, press your SHIFT key on the bottom left corner of your keyboard and highlight the last message you would like to delete. This will highlight a group of emails and can simply click the X at the top toolbar to delete them in bulk. IF you would like to delete only selected messages from your inbox, highlight one message with your cursor and use the CNTRL key on the bottom left corner of your keyboard – and then highlight the 2nd or 3rd + message you would like to delete. This allows you to delete just selected messages.
Please try to be self-sufficient by resolving your email issues using the Tips in Step 2.
3. If you STILL have email problems, the following might be the problem.
-
You are not using the right email user name. Remember, most user names are firstname.lastname001@students.umb.edu BUT, there may be several students with your same name, so you might be user name 002 or even 003. Check with Customer service to verify your email user name address.
-
Likewise, make sure you have the same password that is on the system for you at Customer Service.
NOTE!! Some students confuse zeros “0” in their user name/password for the letter O, especially if the handout is printed in Arial font. Be alert for this and try alternatives if you are sure you are using the right characters but it is not working. Remember the student user name is zero zero one (001) not the alpha letter OO1 – big difference.
4. If you have tried all the steps listed above, ASK A FRIEND OR CLASSMATE if they have experienced the same problem as you. S/he may be able to sit down with you at a computer and help you get logged in and the messages deleted.
5. IF, after you have tried all of these methods and are still unable to access your student email, you can stop by to see me on Monday’s 11-12am or Thursdays 2-3pm for assistance. If you are unable to stop by at those times, leave your name and most accessible phone # with the Front Desk and I will call you to work out your email problems.
