EHS CUrriculum

General Academic Requirements and Standards

Candidates for the bachelor of science degree in Exercise and Health Sciences complete a total of 120 credits. A minimum cumulative average of 2.0 is required for the awarding of the degree. All majors in EHS must achieve a grade of "C" (2.0) or better in BIOL 207/208 and in all required courses designated as EHS. As this publication was going to press, admission requirements for the teaching concentration, as well as the required cumulative grade point average for each concentration, were under review. Certain designated EHS courses and BIOL 207/208 must be retaken if the student receives a grade of "C-" or below. Students must make up any incomplete grade or "C-" grade before entering any EHS course for which the incomplete course or "C-" course is a prerequisite.

General Education Requirements

EHS majors are required to take courses in the following distribution areas: two in natural sciences/mathematics; two in arts and humanities; two in world languages and/or world cultures; and one in social and behavioral sciences. Students must also complete:

  • one year of freshman composition (ENGL 101 and 102);
  • one course in Quantitative Reasoning (MATH Q114), (or demonstrate equivalent competence);
  • statistics; and
  • an Intermediate Seminar, NURSNG G212.

Students matriculating with fewer than 30 credits will be required to complete, in addition to the above, a First Year Seminar. To meet this requirement, EHS students are encouraged to take NURSNG G107 (Understanding HIV Disease). A number of other First Year Seminars, however, may also be taken to meet the requirement.

Writing Proficiency

Each student must demonstrate writing proficiency before accumulating 68 credits, either by taking the CAS Writing Proficiency Examination or submitting a satisfactory portfolio of papers written for UMass Boston courses.

Diversity Requirement

In order to meet the University's diversity requirement, students in the Department of Exercise and Health Sciences are required to take two diversity courses.

Requirements for Majors

All students majoring in Exercise and Health Sciences must maintain current certification in First Aid and CPR. BIOL 207 and 208 are required for all majors and -- for these students only -- are counted as courses in the natural sciences distribution area. All majors must also meet a mathematics requirement.
