2003 CNHS FacultY Accomplishments

Award announcement:

Margaret McAllister PhD., FNP, FAANP, Associate Clinical Professor and Coordinator FNP program has been selected to as a Department of Health and Human Services Primary Health Care Policy Fellow. The fellowship is jointly sponsored by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Health Services Resources and Services Administration, Indian Health Service; and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The six month intensive Fellowship, includes four weeks of on site training in the dynamics of primary health care policy development, the legislative process, resource identification. The goal is to increase the capabilities of leaders in primary care to affect policy change and implementation at the institutional, local, state, and national levels. Dr. McAllister was nominated for the Fellowship by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners where she serves as a member of the Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. McAllister is a family nurse practitioner, at the University Health Services UMass Boston.

Lin Zhan, Associate Professor published an article entitled "Caring for elders with dementia: Chinese American experience" in the Journal of Macau Nursing. (2003) Volume 1.

Presentations:

Avery Faigenbaum, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Exercise Science and Physical Education, gave a keynote address entitled "Youth fitness: Where do we go from here?" at the Nutrition and Fitness Symposium held at the National University of Ireland Galway, January 2003.

Event announcement:

Mary Lewis Sheehan, clinical instructor in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, is co-director of “Arms Around Arlington: The Center for Cancer Education and Support.” The Center is sponsoring an all day town-wide cancer support day this spring. Nursing students from UMass Boston, guided by Professor Victoria Palmer Erbs, will participate. The Center also sponsors support groups, has a monthly column in the local newspaper, and runs a voluntary cancer registry.

Dr. Laurel E. Radwin, Assistant Professor, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, presented "The Development and Psychometric Testing of the Oncology Patients' Perceptions of the Quality of Nursing Care Scale" at the American Cancer Society/Oncology Nursing Society's 7th National Conference on Cancer Nursing Research in February in San Diego, CA. Dr. Kristine Alster and Krista Rubin are co-authors of the paper.

Diana Newman, Associate Professor, represented the National Association of Catholic Nurses at The World Day of the Sick sponsored by the Catholic Health Association in Washington DC on Feb 10-11.
